Program Details:
Shawnee Mission Meals on Wheels is a not‐for‐profit Kansas corporation started in 1972 by two women at the Overland Park Presbyterian Church. We are a human‐health organization that delivers hot noon meals, Monday through Friday, for those who are unable to provide adequately for themselves. Each recipient must be at least 18 years old. There is no requirement to have a home study. Our organization receives no Federal, State or county funding.
Most of our clients typically fall into the following two categories:
Homebound, (for those unable to drive anymore, disabled but still living at home)
short-term (like following a hospital stay).
Those concerned about COVID-19 exposure.
Our clients are the home‐bound, elderly, and disabled. The goal of this organization is to help people maintain their health and to aid them in remaining in their own homes with dignity. Since 1972, we have served over 450,000 meals. Currently, we are serving approximately 1,100 meals per month.
The meals are prepared by Hy‐Vee. The meals are delivered by our friendly volunteer drivers to our clients, many of whom may not have had any other personal contact throughout the day. If no one is at home to accept the meal, it is acceptable to leave a cooler with ice at the front door. The cost for the meal is $6.25. We have a subsidy program for those who are unable to pay the full cost of the meal.
